An airport on Koh Phangan is currently under construction. The island in the Gulf of Thailand will get an airport and first flights will depart in 2013. The airport will be developed by Kan Air, a Thai airline which is aggressively expanding business. Founded in 2010, the airline operates only one Cessna aircraft at the moment. The 12-seater flies between Chiang Mai and Nan, Pai, Mae Hong Son, Phitsanulok and Khon Kaen. Kan Air plans to lease two 50-seater to run the planned route between Bangkok and Koh Phangan three times a day.
The airline stated that the airport will be open for other airlines too. Hopefully, this will make travelling to Koh Phangan not only easier but also more reasonable priced. At the moment, tourists, visitors and residents can reach the islands by several boats from the mainland, or from Koh Samui. Another option is flying to Samui and then take a boat to Phangan but the flights are expensive.
Rumours and plans about an airport on Koh Phangan have been around for several years. Several projects have been started and then had to be stopped due to different reasons. This is the first time that an airport has been officially announced.
The airport which will have a short runway of only 1100 meters, will be located on the east side of Koh Phangan.
